چکیده

conclusion applying serologic tests for infant whose mother is suspected of brucellosis seems logical. patient the patient was a 3.5 month infant with irritability, loss of appetite and immobility of left hip joint since 10 days ago. there was no medical problem during fetal and neonatal period of his life. the infant nutrition was provided by breast feeding. about one month ago his mother has been treated as a brucellosis patient but because of disappearance of her symptoms (pain, knee edema) she stopped her treatment ahead of schedule. in physical exam of the infant his growth and developing indices were normal but there was hypersensitivity in his left hip joint. the important laboratory results were as follows: leukocytosis, wright=1/640, coomb’s wright=1/1280 and 2me=1/160. his disease diagnosed as brucellosis transmitted by lactation and he was treated with co-trimoxazole and rifampin. breast feeding was discontinued and he was fed with formula thereafter. after a few days all symptoms disappeared and he discharged in a good condition. background brucellosis is a common zoonosis disease which affects both humans and animals. common symptoms of brucellosis are: fever, sweating, weakness, lethargy, loss of appetite and arthritis.

Breast-feeding and HIV transmission.

HIV-1 (subsequently referred to as HIV) infection may be transmitted to the infant during breast-feeding. The risk of transmission varies with stage of maternal infection, duration of breast-feeding, type of breast-feeding (i.e. exclusive or mixed breast-feeding), and breast pathology. Recent studies support the findings of a meta-analysis (Dunn et al. 1992) and indicate that when breast-feedin...

Preventing postnatal transmission of HIV-1 through breast-feeding: modifying infant feeding practices.

Approaches to reducing or preventing the risk of postnatal transmission through breast-feeding include the avoidance of all breast-feeding and the use of exclusive replacement feeds or exclusive breast-feeding for a limited duration with early and rapid cessation of breast-feeding around 4-6 months of age. The efficacy and safety of the latter approach have not been established and studies are ...

Further Evidence that Exclusive Breast-Feeding Reduces Mother-to-Child HIV Transmission Compared With Mixed Feeding

The critical role of breastfeeding in improving infant and under-five-year survival in resource-limited settings has been well documented since the mid-1970s. A pooled analysis by the World Health Organization (WHO) of a number of studies on the impact of breastfeeding on child survival showed that the protective effect is strongest in the first six months of life, with a 4–6-fold survival bene...

[Breast feeding].

The research that was carried out with comparative groups showed the influence of the work done by a coordinated health group on the prolonged natural lactation. This experience has proved the evident reduction of percentages of malnutrition and diarrhoea in children under 6 months of age.
